SEO Networker 101 – SEO Basics Part One
The first term you’ll need to learn in connection with SEO is “keyword”. In this introduction, we’re going to go over how keywords relate to search engine page rankings. This is information which is applicable to any website, no matter what business you’re in – or even if you’re in business at all.
But before we delve into keywords, I’d like to address a five basic facts regarding the workings of search engines.
SEO Networker Tip No. 1 – Search Engines Don’t Rank Websites, They Rank Web Pages
When you understand that each web page is important in and of itself, and not the website as a whole, you can begin to develop content for your website that will work to your best advantage. Each page of your website should be focused on one keyword or keyword phrase and have a unique title, a description and keyword meta tags. Keeping your focus as narrow as possible on each page will achieve better results. Consider a combination of keywords that people might use to search for your website and use them to develop effective content. Creating a separate page even for the combined keywords can be beneficial as well.
SEO Networker Tip No. 2 – Remember That You’re Making Your Site For Readers, Not Search Engines
It’s great to have a high page ranking in the search engines, sure – but always remember that your audience is not the search engines. You could come in on the first page of search results, but all the SEO in the world isn’t going to help you actually close the deal (or if your site is not commercially oriented, get visitors to return). While you should be focused on getting into the top of the search engine rankings, don’t do so at the expense of providing visitors with the quality content they’re looking for.
SEO Networker Tip No. 3 – Don’t Try To Optimize Your Site For Too Many Different Keywords
A website should be optimized for five to ten keywords only. Always include the keywords in your meta tags. If your content is good and supports your keywords you will move up in search engine results and page rankings for the particular keywords. Keep in mind that is better to have one page with a number one ranking than three or four with only second and third rankings.
SEO Networker Tip No. 4 – Keep Fresh, Interesting, High Quality Content
I’ve already mentioned this, but it bears repeating – your content is primarily for readers, not search engines. Good content means more visitors and regularly updated content means regular visitors. When you add new content to your site, the search engines will usually re-index your site, which helps out your page ranking. This is one of those things which makes you more appealing to readers and improves your site from a SEO standpoint at the same time, so update your site with high quality, relevant content as often as possible.
SEO Networker Tip No. 5 – Think of Your Links as the Story Line of Your Site
Search engines like a site that has many incoming links to other sites, particularly if the linked site is a popular one. Therefore, it is important to develop links from other sites that have similar content. It is not a good idea to rush out and set up a whole bunch of links all at once. Links that develop slowly and naturally over time are most impressive to search engines.
